Description of Urethral Bulking Injection Procedure
Urethral bulking injections are a minimally invasive procedure, primarily for female patients with symptoms of stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Weak bladder suspension muscles often cause SUI, or the muscles that control urine flow. The urologist performs this procedure with a cystoscope, injecting bulking agents (gel-like collagen material) into the urethra. This closes a hole that allows urine leakage and thickens the urethra wall to improve urine retention.
Urethral bulking procedures are typically performed in an outpatient setting and under local anesthesia. This allows the patient to stand up after the injection to see if continence has been achieved. If not, the Urologist may perform additional injections right away.
Vitality Plus Urology employs two respected names in minimally invasive urethral bulking injection procedures: Durasphere and Coaptite.
Who may benefit from the Urethral Bulking Injection Procedure?
The urologist may suggest urethral bulking injections to treat:
- Women with stress incontinence that do not want or can’t have more invasive surgery
- Women with mixed incontinence
- Women with mild stress incontinence
- This is incontinence that occurs during physical activity, such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercise
- This is stress incontinence combined with urge incontinence (a strong, sudden need to urinate that is unrelated to stressful activities)
