Rezum

The Rezum procedure is a minimally invasive treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is the non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. Here are key details about the Rezum procedure:

The Rezum procedure aims to reduce symptoms of BPH, such as difficulty urinating, increased frequency of urination, and incomplete bladder emptying. It uses steam (water vapor) to ablate (destroy) excess prostate tissue that is causingthe blockage of urine flow. Watch this video to learn more about how Rezum works.

Procedure:

  • A small device is inserted into the urethra, and water vapor is injected directly into the prostate tissue.
  • The steam causes the cells in the targeted area to die. Over time, the body absorbs the treated tissue, reducing the size of the prostate.
  • The procedure typically takes about 10-15 minutes and can be done in a doctor's office or outpatient setting.
  • Local anesthesia or sedation is usually used to minimize discomfort.

Benefits:

  • Compared to traditional surgical methods, Rezum is less invasive and has a quicker recovery time.
  • Many patients experience significant relief from BPH symptoms within a few weeks.
  • There is a lower risk of side effects such as erectile dysfunction and retrograde ejaculation compared to some other treatments.

Recovery:

  • Patients may experience some discomfort, including urinary frequency, urgency, or mild pain, which typically resolves within a few weeks.
  • A temporary catheter may be needed for a few days post-procedure to assist with urination.
  • Regular follow-up appointments are necessary to monitor progress and manage any side effects.

Risks and Considerations:

  • Potential side effects include urinary tract infections, hematuria (blood in urine), and temporary urinary retention.
  • Patients with certain medical conditions or very large prostates may not be suitable candidates for the Rezum procedure.
  • While the procedure has shown promising results, long-term data on its efficacy and safety are still being gathered.
  • Clinical studies have shown that Rezum can significantly reduce BPH symptoms and improve the quality of life for many patients. High levels of patient satisfaction have been reported, with many individuals experiencing sustained symptom relief for several years post-treatment.

The Rezum procedure offers a promising alternative to traditional surgical treatments for BPH, providing symptom relief with fewer risks and a quicker recovery time. However, it is essential for patients to consult with their healthcare provider to determine if Rezum is the appropriate treatment based on their specific condition and overall health.
