Axonics®

The Axonics® device is a type of sacral neuromodulation (SNM) therapy used to treat overactive bladder (OAB). This device is designed to help regulate bladder function by sending mild electrical pulses to the sacral nerves, which are located in the lower back and influence bladder control.

Key Features and Benefits

1. Implantable Device: The Axonics device is implanted under the skin in the lower back during a minimally invasive outpatient procedure.

2. Rechargeable Battery: It features a rechargeable battery, which can last up to 15 years, significantly reducing the need for replacement surgeries compared to non-rechargeable devices.

3. MRI Compatibility: The device is designed to be MRI-compatible, allowing patients to undergo MRI scans under certain conditions without removing the device.

4. Adjustable Stimulation: The stimulation settings can be adjusted by the healthcare provider to optimize treatment based on individual patient needs.

 How It Works

1. Stimulation of Sacral Nerves: The device sends electrical impulses to the sacral nerves, which are involved in controlling bladder and bowel functions.

2. Modulation of Nerve Activity: These impulses modulate the nerve activity, helping to normalize the communication between the brain and the bladder.

3. Symptom Relief: This neuromodulation can reduce urinary urgency, frequency, and incontinence, providing significant relief from OAB symptoms.

 Procedure

1. Evaluation: Patients typically undergo an evaluation period with a temporary external stimulator to determine if sacral.

2. Therapy begins with a two-week trial period employing a wearable, external version of the device to determine if the treatment is likely to be effective for a patient.

3. If the trial produces positive results, the device is implanted in a patient’s lower back near the sacral nerves.

4. After surgery, your doctor will configure the device’s electrical signals based on the results from the trial period.
