Here are some FAQs to consider:
Q. How do you test for male infertility?
A. First, your Urologist will interview you about your medical and reproductive history. He will check your surgical records and consider any medications you take. The doctor will ask about lifestyle issues such as alcohol, tobacco and narcotic use. He will ask about any sexually transmitted diseases you may have had in the past. The doctor will also perform a thorough physical exam and request a semen sample for evaluation.
Q. How common is male infertility?
A. In about a third of all infertile couples, the cause is due to a male problem.
Q. What causes male infertility?
A. A major cause of male infertility – up to 40% of cases – are abnormally developed veins near the testicles that can be corrected surgically. Another major cause of male infertility is a low sperm count in the semen. There are other physical conditions that lead to male infertility. Finally, some male infertility cases have no known cause.
Q. What is a sperm analysis?
A. Your urologist, or another trained clinician, will assess the number of sperm in your semen, looking at their shape and activity, among other factors. In general, a high number of healthy, active sperm means higher fertility.
Q. How often do you discover the cause of infertility?
A. When both the male and female are tested, there is about an 85% chance we can discover the problem. If there is a blockage or malformation, these can often be corrected surgically. Non-surgical treatments have also shown success. When couples accurately determine the cause, get help and keep trying, their chance of conception increases.
We have come a long way from the days when infertility was automatically “the woman’s problem.” Tests and therapies for the male can help a couple’s chances of conception, so make an appointment today. To learn more, contact Vitality Plus Urology.
